... has nothing to do with Gilbert Blythe: it is Marilla's wrenching confession in the penultimate chapter:

    "Oh, Anne, I know I've been kind of strict and harsh withth you maybe -- but you mustn't think I didn't love you as well as Matthew did, for all that. I want to tell you now when I can. It's never been easy for me to say things out of my heart, but at times like this it's easier. I love you as dear as if you were my own flesh and blood and you've been my joy and comfort ever since you came to Green Gables."

Margaret Atwood 가 쓴, M&S (Toronto) 의 1992년 판 『Anne of Green Gables』의 후기(? afterword)를 읽다가 지하철 안에서 눈물이 나올뻔 했다. 애트우드는, 『빨강머리 앤』에서 소설이 진행되는 동안 진정한 캐릭터의 변화를 겪은 이는 마라라 밖에 없다고 한다. 앤을 처음 보자마자, 한 눈에 반하듯 사랑해 버린 매슈 아저씨와 달리 마리라가 앤을 받아들인 이유는 다소 냉정한 의무감 때문이었다고, 매슈 아저씨가 처음부터 "kindred sprit"이었던 것과 달리 마리라와의 kinship 은 천천히 이루어졌다고 한다. 그러나,

... Marilla goes deeper: Marilla, too, has been "odd", ugly, unloved. She, too, has been a victim of fate and injustice.

    Anne without Marilla would -- admit it -- be sadly one-dimensional, an overtalkateve child whose precocious cuteness might very easily pall... 『빨강머리 앤』에서 가장 기억에 남는 마리라의 모습은, 대놓고 못생겼다고 얘기하는 린드 부인에게 분통을 터뜨린 앤이 울며 뛰어나간 후, 어릴 적 이웃 여자에게 들었던 "이 아이는 어쩌면 이렇게 못생겼을까" 라는 말을 기억하고 그때의 아픈 마음이 50년이 지나도록 잊혀지지 않는 걸 떠올리며, 린드 부인에게 앤의 외모에 대해서 이러쿵저러쿵 하는 게 온당하지 않다고 이야기하는 부분이다. 이 장면에서 결정적으로 마리라가 좋아졌던 것 같다. 그때 50년에 한참 모자라는 세월을 살았지만 마리라의 아픈 마음을 이해할 수 있을 것 같았다.

『빨강머리 앤』을 다시 읽어줄 때가 온 것일까? 그리고, 애트우드, 원래 좋았지만 새삼스레 너무너무 좋구나! >_<
